The Tenure Game: Building Up Academic Habits

    Get PDF
Why do some academics continue to be productive after receiving tenure? This paper answers this question by using a Stackelberg differential game between departments and scholars. We show that departments can set tenure rules and standards as incentives for scholars to accumulate academic habits. As a result, academic habits have a lasting positive impact in scholar’s productivity, leading to higher scholar’s productivity rate of growth and higher productivity level.Role of economists; sociology of economics.

Human Development, Economic Policy and Income Inequality in Cabo Verde

    Get PDF
By most accounts, Cabo Verde is making tremendous achievements economically, politically, and socially. Forty years after becoming independent, it finds itself consistently among the highest performers on human development scales anywhere in Africa. This paper is a reflection on Cabo Verde’s development and economic growth as it relates to questions of income and resource distribution. Specifically, it considers the challenge of inequality in the distribution of income and the possibility that present inequality trends may be related to economic policy-making over that last twenty-five years. It draws on government reports and United Nations and World Bank documents to capture the trajectory of inequality in this time period, and on recent ethnographic studies to substantiate its manifestations through different segments of the social system

Massive MIMO Full-Duplex Relaying with Optimal Power Allocation for Independent Multipairs

    Get PDF
With the help of an in-band full-duplex relay station, it is possible to simultaneously transmit and receive signals from multiple users. The performance of such system can be greatly increased when the relay station is equipped with a large number of antennas on both transmitter and receiver sides. In this paper, we exploit the use of massive arrays to effectively suppress the loopback interference (LI) of a decode-and-forward relay (DF) and evaluate the performance of the end-to-end (e2e) transmission. This paper assumes imperfect channel state information is available at the relay and designs a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) filter to mitigate the interference. Subsequently, we adopt zero-forcing (ZF) filters for both detection and beamforming. The performance of such system is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER) at both relay and destinations, and an optimal choice for the transmission power at the relay is shown. We then propose a complexity efficient optimal power allocation (OPA) algorithm that, using the channel statistics, computes the minimum power that satisfies the rate constraints of each pair. The results obtained via simulation show that when both MMSE filtering and OPA method are used, better values for the energy efficiency are attained.Comment: Accepted to the 16th IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications - SPAWC, Stockholm, Sweden 201

Localization studies of the FemXAB protein family in Staphylococcus aureus

Dissertação apresentada para a obtenção do Grau de Mestre em GenĂ©tica Molecular e Biomedicina, pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de CiĂȘncias e TecnologiaThe public health burden of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains and the emergence of vancomycin resistance in S. aureus call for alternative strategies in chemotherapy. The FemXAB family of proteins is responsible for the assembly of the characteristic pentaglycine cross-bridge in the peptidoglycan of S. aureus, which is essential both for cell viability and for the expression of high level methicillin resistance. Fem proteins are, therefore, good candidate targets for the development of pathogen specific antimicrobial compounds, acting alone or synergistically with -lactams. In this work, we characterized the localization of the FemX, FemA and FemB proteins (which add the 1st; 2nd and 3rd; 4th and 5th glycines of the crossbridge, respectively) during the bacterial cell cycle, using fluorescence microscopy. These proteins localized preferably at the membrane, including the septum, and de-localized in the absence of the peptidoglycan precursor. FemA and FemB proteins colocalized in all cells observed during the different stages of the cell cycle, whilst FemX and FemA proteins co-localized in 64% of the cells. To determine if the FemB protein was dependent on FemA for proper localization, different approaches were used to attempt inactivation of the femA gene, but all were unsuccessful, suggesting that femA may be a lethaltarget

A Growth Model for the Quadruple Helix Innovation Theory

    Get PDF
We propose a theoretical growth model with which to frame analytically the Quadruple Helix Innovation Theory (QHIT). The aim is to emphasise the investment in innovation transmission mechanisms in terms of economic growth and productivity gains, in one-high-technology sector, by stressing the role played by the helices of the Quadruple Helix Innovation Model: Academiaand Technological Infrastructures, Firms of Innovation, Government and Civil Society. In the existing literature, the relationship between the helices and respective impacts on economic growth does not appear clear. Results are fragiledue to data weakness and the inexistence of a theoretical framework to specify the relationship between the helices. Hence our motivation for providing the QHIT with a theoretical growth model. Our intent is to model the importance of emerging, dynamically adaptive, and transdisciplinary knowledge and innovation ecosystems to economic growth. We .nd that higher economic growth rate is obtained as a result of an increase in synergies and complementarities between different productive units, or an incease in productive government expenditure.Economic Growth; Quadruple Helix Innovation Model; Innovation Ecosystems.
